Couple or three years old now but I thought this might be of interest/help - definitely thought provoking albeit common sense really. Depends on target audience of course though

Whenever we design a site, we always discuss the two F's. Function and Fashion. An effective website needs a balance of these two thoughts.

Quite right Function sometimes gets sidelined for fashion I think - long waits for pages to load, even on 'powerful' systems, links that don't, etc.
