How do I remove the background from this text and make it
transparent?
It now has a white background and when I put in on black, the white shows up.
Thanks in advance for all your help!

Hi Ronald, you need to go to the File menu and select Export In the Export Dialogue Box,
select Portable Network Graphic as your file type and on the Palette Options tab, select
True Colour + Alpha from the Colour Depth Dropdown menu.

Bob that approach only works with a graphic created first with Xtreme.
What we have here is a rectangular bitmap with white as a background.
The Medhi eraser can remove most of the white, but as the image is a low quality jpg, there are jpg compression artifacts and other pixel untidiness to remove.
My suggestion would be to use the shape editor to slice out the white, apply a small amount of feathering to the lettering and then use your suggestion to export as a PNG True Colour + Alpha
you could use a bitmap or stained glass transparency to remove the white, although there may be a shift in the color value

Nothing lasts forever...
Create this text with a normal font, convert it to editable shapes and play with the basic vector functions of Xara Xtreme. It's the best way to learn.
Remi
As Remi was suggested, just re-create your text in Xara (use this font or trace by hands) -- you'll get perfect result )) You would spend ~20 mins to tracing...

Using Steve's suggestion of applying a stained glass transparency works well, but this bitmap has a lot of unwanted coloured pixels outside the lettering, that definitely detract from the finished appearance.
How critical is it that it is exact?
The text itself can be produced in seconds if you can use a standard font as a substitute.
As Remi and Alex suggested, if it needs to be exact, then trace it and produce a perfect vector. It will be much cleaner. Alternately, use a standard font, convert to editable shapes and deform to suit - again, a perfect vector.

Seriously, fooling around with that bitmap using bitmap tools will only end up with a half baked job.
Using Remi, Alex or my suggestions will give you the best results and has been said, it the best way to learn about Xara's tools. You're future satisfaction is guaranteed if you take the effort now
Edit: attached a sample.
Once you have a hand drawn/traced vector copy - your options are vast, limited only by your imagination.

My apologies Ronald, it never occurred to me it was a bitmap! I don't function well later in the day. I agree that the only real solution is
to hand trace the letters with the shape editor tool, the result will be a clean and sharp vector, which you can edit any way you wish.

Bob.
