Default Making a "hole" in a bitmap?

Is there a way to take a .jpg of something like a window or picture frame, and cut an irregular-shaped transparent hole in the middle so whatever it's laid over will show through the hole? I can do it with a rectangular shape for the opening and clipview with the underlying image, but it's still not what I'm looking for. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    No problem:

    1. Import a bitmap
    2. Draw your irregular shape above the bitmap
    3. Select both, bitmap and shape
    4. Choose "Arrange" -> "Combine Shapes" -> "Substract Shapes" or use Ctrl+2

Remi's method shown works well with text too, to enable a text shaped hole to be cut.
