Can't open Vector Icons (eps) - XXP4 crashes

Hi,

I found some free Vector Icons in .eps Format and tried to open them in Xara:

In XXP4 I get to choose "Optimize for Editing" or "Optimize for Viewing".

The first option opens the icons, but they do not look like they should. They are somehow crippled, at least most of them.

Chosing the second options crashes XXP4 EVERY time (brand new machine, lots of RAM, Vista SP1)

Opening with XXP3.2 gives me the same results as the first option on XXP4.

Could anybody try opening these, so they look as they should, i.e. does your version of XXP4 crash as well when chosing the second option?

I guess it would be OK to post a successful try as a .xar file, since they are free anyway ??

The file is dodgy - for a start it's not an EPS file, but a type of PDF file in fact (which is why you get the PDF import prompt).

Anyway we'll look into what's happening here and see if we can fix it. Thanks for the pointer to the file.

maybe this additional information helps: I found another file on the same server with people's silhouettes: http://garcya.us/blog/silhouette-vectors/

I get the same dialog box, but in this case it opens perfectly when I choose the second option.

The first file (the icons) seem to contain lots and lots of nodes/objects, maybe that's why XXP4 crashes?
Some kind of memory overflow or something ??

Hello,

Of course it won't open because you need Adobe Illustrator to open those files.
They are EPS and AI files not "PDF" files.
Trust me, I own them

Garcya - I'm not understanding you. Xtreme is supposed to be able to import .eps and .ai formats.

I don't know that program, but this icons are made with Illustrator CS3 and saved with that version.
Maybe this is the problem ?
Try to open them with Illustrator and you will see.

you are quick in checking your referers ;-)

Like Ross said, Xara Xtreme Pro is supposed to open .eps files.
When I look at the header of the Icon-File, it reads "%PDF-1.4", so maybe that's just the format that Illustrator CS3 is saving it?

I tried opening them in Photoshop CS3 (I don't have Illustrator).
This works only, if I rename the file to .ai or .pdf
With .eps I get a "Program Error".

Also, no matter what I try, I get a document with only the top 9 and a half rows of icons, everything below is cut off.

I really like your icons, could you maybe try this:

Split the large Icon-File into chunks of, say 20 icons per file.
Since the "People's Silhouettes" open perfectly, maybe it would work with the icons too?
Or maybe saving it as an earlier version of Illustrator?

That's correct I opened them in AI CS3 fine.
Converting them to Illustrator9 .ai file version and the file opens in Xtreme4 fine.
I have saved this as a .xar if Wolfgang would like it? (3.19mb zip file)
And if that's ok with Garcya ?

Looking at Garcya's site it looks like he's encouraging sharing:

Enjoy and share this beautiful file with others, but please try to save the image on your server if linking to this file. Image is more than 1 MB and will heavy load my traffic if every one of you will link to it. Thank you!

NOTE: There is some question over the original artist for these icons.
I'd advise not using them publicly for the time being.
