Laura wants to record audio on the computer. Could use some guidance.
For me, it would be just recording frog sounds, but she wants voice.

Rich if you have the full version of Nero for burning CDs it also includes a wave file editor. You can record audio using the microphone and/or the line-in jack on your sound card.
There are some very good commercial programs available as well as some good freeware and shareware programs.
You can also use the Windows Sound Recorder.
My favorite program was bought out by Adobe and is now called Adobe Audition. It is expensive but still one of the best available in my opinion.

Oh almost forgot...Gold Wave is a good recorder/editor for audio files. http://www.goldwave.com/

FWI,
My stepson is a musician and records and premixes his tracks using Cubase before taking them to a professional studio. Cakewalk has some good products as well. All are pretty expensive, I think.
if its only for speech - doesn't need to be expensive?
as for frogs ... well out of my sphere of experience....

Hi Rich,
Maybe take a look at Magix site, they have great audio products
and as Xara member you might even get a discount
Hans
Bill and I have similar tastes it seems
However, a beaut freeware open source software for recording and editing sounds is Audacity. It's feature rich and works very well indeed.
Thanks for the responses. I found a Mic in the shed and maybe where to plug it in.
Bill,
Adobe looks nice. Laura has an acoustic neuroma, and after FSR she lost hearing on the affected side. I am not sure how this will affect her voice. I like the idea of learning how all this goes together before I would consider something like Adode.
Steve,
Everything is on the motherboard including the sound card. No idea how all this goes together. I saw something for setting up speakers. But, that was all.
ScottF,
I did see some free downloads. I'll look more when I have time.
Hans,
There were a few programs at Magix. More looking.
Steve,
I thought I would start with Audacity.
Thanks again to everyone.
Rich
audacity is a good program once you get into it
[if your sound is on the board -software should be on CD that came with it/computer - but if you like audacity no need to bother ]

Hi Rich,
some mics don't have enough output to drive a soundboard. In that instance, just run it through a cassette deck on your stereo and then to the input on your sound/motherboard. You would just be using the stereo as a preamp.
I like adobe audition... one of the few products by Adobe I like.
