very slow rendering extrusion

I downloaded and opened the first file. took a couple of minutes, 4 CPU at 100%, about 400meg memory consumption on the .exe alone.
CPU is QX9650, graphic card is 8800GT, so I doubt its due to old and bad equipment.

I tried the same thing, using text and graphics, group it up, extrude and color the side. Its blazing fast. Its no problem to turn it around in real time.
