Default Cannot edit bitmaps with PhotoPaint

    This problem just arose today.

I have a file with some imported bitmaps and when I use Edit Bitmap, it opens MS Paint. I have read of this problem and I did the F8 reset and the file association "fix" (it was not unchecked).

Any ideas what is causing this and how I can fix it? Do I need to uninstall?

Go to My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types.

Go down the list to BMP and on the "opens with" dialogue box Click "Change" and navigate to the program you want to use to edit bitmaps (presumably PhotoPaint)

    [1] Follow Keiths steps.
    or
[2] Right-Click a bitmap and choose 'Open With' - follow the steps to choose the default program.
    or
[3] Try a File Association Editor such as this one

It didn't help. I really don't understand. This just started today and I haven't changed any settings.

Might it be because I uninstalled my trial of Xara??

If you are referring to the File Association Editor, then the file downloaded and installed fine for me.

Remember though that the application is dependant on the presence of MSVBVM50.DLL on your system which you may need to download also.

I think that he/she is referring to the file that wanted to open in MS Paint in the original post.

No, I meant the File Association Editor.

I don't know where I need to stick the .dll

When I try to run the FAE, I get this error:

Component 'COMCTL32.OCX' not correctly registered: file missing or invalid.

Download the comctl32.ocx file and copy it to the system32 directory on your computer.

Copy the MSVBVM50.DLL to the same directory.

You may need to reboot your PC before running FAE again

Just FYI, I fixed it by doing a repair "install" of the Graphics Suite. Whatever registry or file or bit of code that was slipping was negated.

    Thanks for your help though!
