Ready, Set, Dodgeball!

Hey all,
I'm relatively new to the design game. I'm currently having a bit of difficulty drawing spherical shapes. I can make a sphere, but I can't get the dodgeball style checkered pattern to follow the curves of the sphere.
I'm using a CorelDRAW X3.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Isn't this 2D software? I have CorelDraw 7. Corel Dream is 3D software that was part of the Corel suite many versions ago. Does CD X3 have a 3D application in the suite?
