Copy image from one document to another?

This is so basic I'm almost embarrassed to ask. I do this so seldom that I forget in between projects. I'm trying to copy a photograph into a greetings card and I can't for the life of me get it to work. Help would be appreciated.

Hi Lizzie,
- Open the "source" image
- Select some area (object) with the Selection tool
- Press [Ctrl+C] to copy the selected area
- Open "destination" image
- Press [Ctrl+V] to paste the copied pixels
- Activate the Pick tool [K] and adjust the object's size and position
