Why is it that some fonts come up as just rectangles instead of letters or shapes?

It means there is no info for that "letter" in the file. For example some fonts use caps only. You can use some free programs to see what is offered in each font so you know what is and is not there. What I mean is sometimes there are also extra characters in the font file that you may not see typing one word. I use the font thing it's a nice little program that lets you organize your fonts your way and also lets you see characters in each font file.
