I took your drawing - clearly a traced bitmap. Took the black background and moved it to a layer behind the white tree. Created a red square on a layer behind the white tree but above the background rectangle. Now you can see there are black shapes sitting over the white tree shape. I selected a number of these black shapes, grouped them, then subtracted them from the white tree. Repeat until there are no more black shapes. Now hide the red layer and it looks like it did before. To export as a transparent image, just select the white tree and export that in a format that supports transparency (gif or png probably).

Thanks for posting that Steve - I've learned something new. I didn't realise that joining could make things so easy.

...and another way of doing it: Ctrl-click on the background of the trace and delete. Select the rest (eg with Ctrl+A) and Join shapes (Ctrl+J).

This is generally how I do this as well. I prefer using the vectors whenever & AMA possible.

Many time's I have to create an Underbase(UB) for dark garment printing. If the object is a vector I can outline it. The UB has to have an white outline so that colors printing after it will fall to the outside of the UB touch the garment or print beyond the white of the UB. They call these traps or wells.
