    Default deteriorated fonds

    Hi,
when I am using XaXm and am working with jpegs at one point or other any text i have entered looks really deteriorated.

check out www.modeaceleste.com for an example.

I have not been able to find out at which point this happens.

Does anyone know about this problem and how to go around it?

    Thx so much

    Olaf

    Olaf,
The link you posted doesn't show anything, IE can't find it. Can you try again?

Welcome to the Xtreme Conference Olaf

JPEG is not the best file format for text.

GIF or 8-bit PNG is better.

    Hi RonDuke,

    I misstyped: www.modaceleste.com

    Hi gwpriester,

I used some jpg pictures and the fonds are truetype.
But they display like some real bad bitmap fonds that have been enlarged too much. And not just after export! The fonds looks like that even in xara itself!

On the site above I created the text with the Xara text tool using the Georgia fonds.

Thanks to you both for your help.
    regards
    Olaf

    Olaf,

the places where you use text inside the graphics you should probably just use text in your page and let the images remain images.
As a bonus, you dont need to care about the problems you are just facing. And second .... all text can be found using search engines. If you embed the text inside an image, it will be a bitmap too and not be indexed.

    Hi Jürgen,
    thanks a whole lot.
Very true. I will do that.

However the riddle remains unsolved: what is going on and why does it do that?

I have had this happen to several of my graphics and it becomes anoying especially if I forgot to version my backups.

    Regards
    Olaf

The fonts should not look that way in Xtreme. They can look bad on exporting as a jpg. depending on the output quality of the jpg.

Fonts will look jaggy if you have the 'smoothing' set low (see screenshot below)

Make sure you set the slider fully to the right

If you use a 100% jpg it will look good but you pay a hefty penality in file size. 70% is usually a good compromise for text/continual color.

    Hey that did the trick!

Thanks so much to you and the others...

The slider was aaaaaalmooost to the right (when I clicked on the text with the text tool) and moving it that last notch made things look good again.

Strange though...I do not recall altering that setting (since I did not even know about it).

    Regards
    Olaf
