Thank You Egg and Bob for wonderful explanations. I now understand - although still trying to get my head around clipview (and to be truthful, around most of the other features too). Am reading the forums daily and browsing all the tutorials. All of you guys make me feel small - you are such amazing artists.

It would make sense for Xara to retain the true dimensions of line widths further down the display quality continuum, and to have a discrete button for it.

When I was using X1.1, I itemized (for my perverse pleasure) what each of the settings on the Display Quality Slider seemed to do... starting with '1' on the right side:

    [1 Anti-aliased]
    • full quality

    [2 Normal]
    • anti-alias off

    [3]
    • graduated fills off
    • transparencies, including graduated transparencies, remain.
(The behaviors for fills and transparency also apply to blends, even with mixed types.)

    [4 - Simple]
    • line widths all becomes single thickness (about .67px), but retain color
    • lines with no width remain invisible.

    [5]
    • all remaining fills off
(that would be flat fills and transparencies/graduated transparencies in shapes and blends)
    • lines/outlines lose any color, become black.
    • zero-width lines appear (with same black mono-thickness as the others)

    [6]
    • bitmaps off

    [7 - Outline]
    • blends show only end shapes.

Shame there isn't say a view quality notch or other setting which allows selection of transparent objects.

Isn't that exactly what there is ............
The slider says "SET VIEW QUALITY". Set the quality so the whole shape shows and it is then selectable. The problem comes in actually selecting it from others when there are 30000 shapes suddenly all viewable together.

Ok, no, doesn't work really :-(

but try the one I attached! I don't know which part of the process made selection possible, but there it is anyway.

    Hi Jon,

    Found what you did;
you grouped it first and THEN applied the transparency
    actually you have multiple objects,
but it also works with ONE object

Very nice, Hans! We have a workaround, then.

Unfortunately, if you're using solid dragging, which I think is the default for Xtreme Pro, you can't visually reposition the invisible object (without trial and error) so you end up needing to use the Outline display and/or arrow keys anyway.

You can turn off solid dragging to get the moving visible outline, by setting the value to '0':

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xara\...\Options\Draggi ng\SolidDragging

'Make groups be transparent as a whole' also has to be ticked on.

    Hi,

I use the standard settings, like most people, imho and this works, for me the initial question asked in this thread
You're right that if the group whole transparency is changed the work around doesn apply anymore

If you really want to select an object that you want to change WITHOUT selecting on screen or using any registry changes you must NAME the object and select it in the NAME gallery.
