    I would adjust the shot so the brightest part is barely over-exposed (1-2) and the dark areas within reach (try to keep it greater than -3) then use sucessive copies adusted for the proper level in that part of the picture. Then use transparency or slice and dice to get a better shot. It is better to under expose a digital shot, than over expose. You can grab more out of the shadows, but white is white.
