Pen Tool probem

Hi, I am using the pen tool to trace around the outline of a person in a photo
so that i can delete the background. However i keep getting a black fill between the first point that i click and every subsequent click. Are my setting
incorrect.

you may well have 'Shape layers' option selected - try changing this to 'Paths' which is what is usually best for vector masks [ see help under 'Drawing Modes' [CS3]]
