Convert a photo to B&W

HI All,
I am again playing with the extraction of an image from a background - my daughter with her cousins. What I'd like to do is have her appear in colour and her cousins in B&W. At the moment I used the shape editor tool to extract my daughter onto a drawing layer, and have the kids on the background photo, all in colour. Do I need to import a B&W copy of the photo of all the kids as a separate layer to do what I want....?
How can I make the photo B&W? Can I do it in Xtreme?

More ways. The first is drawing a black object over the image and setting it to saturation transparency. You can adjust the object shade to vary the saturation.

The next way is to color the image from the color line and using the image from the bitmap gallery for bitmap transparency. I place the image over a white object.

But then how do I draw "through" the B&W version to lift colour from the colour photo...?
So in the above image, the thistle would be in colour whilst the background would be B&W.

Now I've lost my damn drawing line on my drawing layer again.... What a waste of time.... think I'll give it up.....

This is with eliptical transparency of a black object in saturation. I think the method would depend on the desired result.

What I am trying to do is have 2 identical images, pone in colour the other in B&W. The drawing on the coloured layer to feature my daughter, and combine the images so that the cousins appear in b&w with my daughter in colour.... will give it a try again. I don't see why it shouldn't work.

The method I would use is to cut out daughter from one copy; leave that one in colour. Then in the original, apply the contone affect, placing this behind your daughter.

You can make a black brush, and paint on desaturation as well. I would make a circular object with circulat transparency, and make a bitmap copy. Make it a brush and turn off tile fill. Paint a line, set it to saturation transparency. Then turn on most recent attributes. Just another way. Of course, extraciting a portion of an image and using it would twork,too. Just chost the wway you prefer.
