    Default Need some friendly critique

    OK,

    Could use some friendly critique.

I know it's another bow, don't worry next it'll be rick rack.

I have been trying to follow tutorials for this but in Photoshop directions. Xara has been good to me so far, but I'm not sure if the general public would feel that this looks like the "real" thing.

    Comments welcome,

    Jen

Smile Re: Need some friendly critique

Hi there, this is my first post after reading many for months!

Jen I have been following your posts on the progress of your scrapbook kit, and I see that you would like some help with your bow. I think I may be able to help you as I was a florist for 10 years and we didn't use crumpled ribbon!

The bow its self is quite nice but it needs a little straightening out. I think if you straighten out the long bits and only leave a slight curve in the ribbon - similar to a strand of hair it will look more natural. The loops need rounding slightly at the far ends away from the knot. Then add a little bit of shadow on the edge there. Add a little shadow underneath the whole bow and hopefully it should be closer to what you want.

The only thing to me that doesn't look real is the background and lack of a shadow.
    Excellent!

Yes, add some shadows and it will look more real.
It's pretty neat as it is! =)

I like it. Just add some shadows on the background.

The upper outline is too defined and too dark, otherwise it's amazingly realistic (to me). Impressive!

Scratch the defined part - it may be seen as piping.

Oh yes . . and you need to add some shadow!

    Jen,
I think it looks very realistic, and yes, a shadow would help. This is a cloth ribbon, right?

    Jen,

Looks good, but kind of bland for some reason. Usually people use ribbon to liven things up, not tone it down.

    Just my feel on it.

I think it's great. The rumpled look, fabric pattern, and old-rose coloration is like that of an old dress, put away for years, folded less than perfectly -- a mood and tone that should be ideal for scrapbooking... at least, in the old sense, of items of history and meaning to one person at one moment in time.

Jen have you tried using a shade of one of the colours in the ribbon to replace the black/gray for the shadows around the knot?
