Default issue with unwanted unchangable fills

For some unknown reason, as I started work on a project, I can't draw a shape without a linear fill inside. It won't change to flat fill, but it says it is flat fill. And, it can't be changed. it is as though half the fill is white and the other half starts red. the red part can be changed, but the white remains solid and unmovable.

    Any thoughts?

I guess you have a linear transparency set as a current attribute.

With nothing selected, go into the transparency tool and select <No transparency> in the first dropdown list.

Then the next object you draw should be as you expect again.

Further to Phils comments I'd also suggest you go to:
Utilities / Options / General and ensure that the "Give new objects most recent attributes" check box is unticked.
