Language characters

Although I have used Xara for some time, I have a blind spot about anything to do with fonts. Right now I need to use Ariel in several Eastern European languages. I only need a single sentence for each language, but when I try to import the sentence from ms Word or Publisher, I get "??????....". Ive tried importing each sentence as a bit map but the quality is too poor. Any advice please?

Many thanks to WolfMoonHP! I've struggled with this for weeks but the solution was in WindowsXP Regional Settings.
