I eventually figured out that that button corresponds to what was shown on an earlier version by Joel. However, no control handles appear. Again: perhaps because it is a group (but converting it to bitmap doens't work either).

Since Xara products tend not to be intuitive, I will need a bit more than just showing me what button to push.

If it is a group you should still see control handles, you should be able to post the xar file there is no restriction on xar files.

If it is control nodes you are referring to you would need to ungroup, then select the shape tool to show all the individual nodes.
