Does anyone know what dissolve layers can be used to. I know how dissolve works (making "grainy" transparents), but I haven't so far found any use for it. OK, I know one: If I want to fake a soft drop shadow in a transparent gif, but that's about all.

    Good use Shiraz...

Don't forget too that adjusting the layer's opacity allows for more or less grain dispersion. And also remember that this same effect can be obtained when painting also. Your brushes can be set to this same mode so that you can paint the grain effect on.

If you have a Tablet, then the presssure sensitivity can be set so the grain get's applied more thick or thinly in a reatime fashion. This allows much more specific control/use of this effect.

Bear in mind too that is using just the layer blend mode for the effect, you can always select the obejct that the grain effect has been applied to, and "copy merged". Then paste a hard copy into a new layer, and continue working with it after that. This method allows you to extend the effects on the layer, because if Dissolve blend mode is being applied to one layer, that layer cannot have anything else done to it.

Just some extra things to take note of in regards to using the Dissolve mode. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
