Mightyfun -- look at my second posting above. It solves your problem.
I attach proof. The sharp copy I made had the resolution set at 300dpi.

I am using the right click menu for making "create bitmap copy"
I don't know how to do it any other way. As it is I watch the Xara videos to learn everything. I saw an earlier post on a Xara online class available. I think I might take it just to reduce some of the frustration.
I don't mean to complain, I think Xara is a very user friendly program and the forum is great help also. I just wish I knew how to use all of it's features.
I ordered the program with the manual. It won't get here for another month, so I'm learning with trial and error for now.

Mightyfun, I took your vector background, converted it to jpg, using 100% quality and 300 dpi.

Hi Jen -- You are learning the same way most of us have -- on our own. The forums are here to help as is Gary's XaraXone super resource!
You can make your copies as you have been (just increase the resolution) or use the same command from the arrange menu. Another way is to do an export. By that I mean make a selection and export it as a jpg etc. The resulting file can then be imported back into the program. Will's jpg is such an example. He could use it as a background or fill in another drawing.

Thanks, this discussion helped a lot.

Thanks, also, Ross... Ive tried to do live effects, even simple brightness or sharpness, and after you do a number of these, it really slows down the redraws noticably...
But Im having, in this example, the same problem with blurryness... I created from the above attachment a bitmap copy of the left item with the same result... I changed the color to true without alpha... same... I changed the dpi from 96 to 300, and that was then fine. Well, for obvious reason. But I thought 96 was screen resolution.. why would making a 96dpi bitmap copy give a blurry result?
edit- ok, this was written and posted while/after the above responses, so.. but i guess my last question still stands
