Oh, it it turns out on my file that it wasn't the clipviews that were dragging it down but the shaddows that are internal in the clipviews that were the problem. On the trees I created a large shape and cut out the tree shape then create a glow to add edge shading to the tree. That "shadow" is then clipviewed for the final effect. It seems the dynamic drawing of the shadow/glows on the trees is where the large performance hit is happening.
Bet that's just about as clear as mud.
