The way I solved the AI problem is:

Googling I found a rar file containing a DLL and a reg file. Using these makes it possible to see both AI and EPS provided they have been saved with preview.
(Ai_Thumbnail_Eplorer.rar)
Instructions are:
1) Copy aiicon.dll to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell
if this folder doesn't exist create it.
2) Run AI_Thumb.reg
3) You now can view AI files in thumbnail view within explorer.

EPS and WMF files can be viewed with ACDSee
