Ian, you can make an elliptical selection from the photo in several ways.

    1. Place an ellipse behind the photo, select both the ellipse and the photo and Arrange Menu > apply clip view.

    2. Place an ellipse over the photo, select both and Arrange Menu > Combine Shapes > Intersect shapes.

    3. Place an ellipse over the photo, select both and Arrange Menu > Combine Shapes > Slice (cut) Shapes. Then Break the shapes apart so the outer edges of the photo can be removed.

I've now managed to create my oval -mystery to me I tried the slice/combine options before posting- still problem solved.

Now onto the effect I know my descriptive skills are lacking so I've copied a ggraphic with the effect I wanted perhaps someone (no doubt they will) can tell me which button to press

    thanks

There is another way to skin this cat. Just apply an Elliptical transparency and then clone the image 2 or 3 times to make the center less transparent.

(apologies to Baxter who took umbrage with my comment about skinning a cat).

I believe what you're talking about is a 'vignette'. And once it's finished you can hang it on the wall for everybody to admire...

Aw rats. What a heck of a nice job....

Hey BF, when you're sitting around just watching the dust get bandied about by the universe, could you scribble a quick mini-tut on this particular composition?
