How do I change the background color of my page? I have looked through the menus and nothing obviouse jumps out at me.

Also, for the devs, are there plans to bring the photo editor over to Linux? And is there a comercial version for Linux?

Changing the background color in Xara Xtreme is easy, please look at this thread.

To change the background colour:

Hold down the Ctrl key
Select a colour from the colour bar and drag onto the page.
