Is it possible to move two curve handles at the same time (see example below, i.e. move both 'a' and 'b') to get a symetrical shape?

yes, click on one node, shift click on the other, and then use the arrow keys to move them or simply move one of them with your mouse

I don't believe so, not if the control handles (indicated by A and B above) for the node if it is a cusp-join .
If node is a smooth-join, then moving one node-handle will change the opposite handle-to-node angle only, but not its distance from the node.
If you are looking for a node with properties like that of CorelDRAW's "symetrical" node, it doesn't exist.
Xara's smooth-join node is, however, similar to CorelDRAW's "smooth" node.
In the Help File, do a search for cusp and smooth. It will explain this futher.
I think it would be nice if Xara had a feature by which holding the CTRL + ALT while dragging a node-handle would immitate Corel's symmetrical node.

The QuickShape tool has symmetrical capabilities. You may be able to create what you want there, then graft it onto the shape you're working on.
oh, i am so sorry, that is correct - i was wrong - i was thinking of moving more than one node at a time, not the handles...
