intersect shapes not available

I have just received XaraX1 and when I freehand a line around something in a picture then select it with the selection arrow then go to Arrange down to combine shapes I do not see anything available except add shapes everything else is dimmed. What am I doing wrong. (I was following the movies that come on the CD. She did it just fine.

Hi Larry and welcome to the Xtreme Conference.

Are you sure both shapes are selected? And if you are using a line with a solid shape you can Subtract Shapes or Slice Shapes. The other options may not do what you think they are going to.
