Smile wish list and canvas vs xara

    Hi,
Sorry I'm new to the forum and I'm not a xara user.

I was in the process of buying canvas wish offer vector and bitmaps drawing when I saw xara.

Do someone have work with the two and could give me the plus and minus?

Also one feature of canvas, beside the osX compatibility, il the gis integration.

Beeing a mapmaker, the ability to use gis and drawing together is verry appealing. So, in the development roadmap, do someone know if xara will included such capability (i could buy it right away even if is't not osX). If yes, when is the target time for it?

Looking foward for the mac version. A suggestion for xara. The commercial version of xara mac could offer better integration with the core technology of 10,4 + for manipulate color etc... I will definitely willing to spend some $$ to buy the commercial one if cmyk, pantome and.. core technology is in...

    I haven't used canvas, so I can't really say.

I have no official information, but given the evolution of Xara to date, I would think it's unlikely that such a feature would appear in the near future.

The previous version of Xara (Xara X1) did have support for pantone colours and CMYK colour separations and this was removed from Extreme (a move many would consider to be retrograde), so I wouldn't expect it to be reinstated in the near future.

My advice would be to download the Xtreme trial and see how you like the program. You may even decide to buy Xara and Canvas!

The Xara community is very helpful and Xara does have a dedicated following - try out the trial and see for yourself why!

    Hi there

As well as Paul's advice to test out Xara as a free trial download, you can probably get hold of Canvas for "free" also - here in the UK, Canvas (versions 6, 7 and most recently 8) have been commonly available as free full editions on magazine cover disks, and I guess that ought to be true elsewhere (?). Of course, a free older version won't include the more specialised GIS aspects but would let you do a straight comparison between the core programs so you can choose what feels right for you. I always think that's a more important factor than a feature-by-feature comparison. FWIW I've got Canvas 6 thru 8 but rarely use it. I find Xara much more "transparent" in that I can just get on and create, rather than thinking too much about the program. But that's partly a result of having used it since Xara Studio under Windows 3.1... and also learning from Gary and the other good people here. Canvas probably has a fuller set of text-bsed features, allowing a greater use of paragraph styles and formatting (more like CorelDraw in that respect) alongside vector and bitmap features. Good luck!

I used Canvas X for a while (almost a year or even longer), but uninstalled it several weeks ago. xtreme is far more intuitive, faster and stable. Imports into Canvas will crash the app at a rate of 90% - buggy filters are the reason. Canvas is extremely memory hungry - don't tell me I didn't warn you

You can beat Canvas with this bundle:

    xtreme
    gimp/corel photopaint

OK, for map editing and creation there is nothing similar in this bundle, but I could imagine there are many other apps for small budgets on the market to cover this area.

Thanks for the information. I will stick with my gis program for now and I whon't buy canvas. I will save almost 1000$.

I'm looking foward for the mac version since for now, without gis integration it whon't help in the short term, having to do mapping in gis program. Gis are not verry good for the mapping finition... it's for that I was looking to canvas first.

I'm not interested in cavas prior to X because it's the ability to make maps and it's not available before X.
