Default bevel effect looking bad in Illustrator?

I have one problem, I have designed a vector clipart in xara extreme, and used the bevel tool on some of the objects, everything is looking good, but If I export it as a ai / eps, and open it in Illustrator CS2 and convert it to illustrator 8 (I need to do this for the firm a ship vector graphics to) I will get a problem, illustrator complains that “The document Raster Effects resolution is 72 ppi or less.”?? How do I change this “setting” in Xara? All my bevel are look very bad after export to ai or eps from xara.

    Many thanks in advance!

    Best regards,

    Andreas Hoynala

    Hello Andreas & Welcome,

I don't use Illustrator so I might be completely wrong, but have you tried exporting via PDF? Will this resolve your problem? If it doesn't solve it, don't worry, some other talkgraphic member will set you in the right direction.

One possible workaround is to select your bevel, right click, select 'create bitmap copy' (with Alpha at 300 dpi). Now replace your original with the new bitmap copy. Export to ai.
You will have lost the ability to adjust the Bevel in Xara, but as you're exporting to Illustrator it's no big deal. Bevels are only bitmaped filled shapes in Xara.

    Andreas and Egg,
you should set 300 dpi in the options menu before generating any bevel (or shadows) if your document is for printing.
Please note "BEFORE" since previous effects are not affected.
You can find more on page 258 of printed manual.

    Ciao

When in doubt, CMYK TIFF is a good option at 300-600dpi resolution.

The only problem with this is the file will be a bitmap and cannot be edited except as a bitmap. But anything that you can do in Xtreme, including bevels, will export well.

    Hi Luciano,

Thanks , I it is working better for the bevel, it is looking much better, But the shadows is not working at all, they are now only a black area instead of a shadow, and the strange thing is that Illustrator is still telling me that the raster effect is only 72 ppi? any more suggestions?

    /Andreas

    Andreas,
don't forget to set also 300 dpi resolution for bitmaps in PDF Export
    (Rasterized resolution in: PDF Export->Objects)

I tested the pdf output in Illustrator CS2 and were OK

    ciao

I looked everywhere for that bitmap dpi setting and decided I was thinking about another program. Thanks for finding it.
