    Willy,

first of all there is the GIMP for Windows. It's free, comes with tons of effects you'd have to purchase separately as plug-ins for other software. You can even integrate your current PS plug-ins via a plug-ins.exe - browse the site for it. Supports Wacom graphic tablets.
    http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

Then there is the GimpShop for Windows - GIMP with a PS GUI. Freeware as well.
    http://blog.yumdap.net/archives/43-G...-released.html

Pixel Image Editor. US$ 32, later it'll be US$ 100. Very professional software with many features.

PhotoLine 32. A PS clone with tons of features for less than US$ 100. Demo available.

FotoFiltre - a great software if you just want to enhance your images. Free.
    http://photofiltre.free.fr/

Pixia - freeware picture publishing and drawing software from Japan. English version available.
    http://park18.wakwak.com/~pixia/

DigiFoto - freeware. I think he even offers an English version.

Paint.Net - a fantastic freeware from Washington State University. Very small footprint on the HD.
    http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/

Ultimate Paint - don't know anything about it except it's free.
    http://www.ultimatepaint.com/

Project Dogwaffle - a free paint and retouch software with tons of filters.
    http://www.squirreldome.com/

On ebay you might be able to get a Corel PhotoPaint V7 - great features for little money.

I'll end the list here - should be more than enough to read over the weekend.

However, if you want more, just let me know

    enjoy!

    Doug,

the story / history was a bit different than you told it:

Columbus started his journey because he wanted to prove the globe is a sphere and that he won't fall off the disc - despite the 'we know it all better' guys who kept telling him the earth is a disc and reaching the rim incorporates a high risk.

So he actually fits into the category of creative people who set their own standards, don't you think?

Maybe you should research some Spanish sources before you post statements like.

    Hi guys,
Well, my graphic design friend has been in the field for about thirty years so maybe he is not up to date!!!!
I have really enjoyed this thread and thanks for the Gimp references and such. I will check them out.
I have PS CS, Adobe Illustrator 9 of which I have not touched, Paint Shop Pro and the lists goes on. I have really only used PS. In the past, I have been doing digital photography and want to extend my photos to more. I have decided to spend my time learning Xara to illustrate and design textiles, art quilts and quilts which would include textile painting.
If anyone is interested in what is going on in the quilt world (which is world wide) you can check out my photosite. I went to the International Quilt Show in Houston this year.
Check it out you may be surprised. Their are four albums starting with album four.
I think I am in the album on the Big Red Sun nursery which is further down >> not glamour shots for sure.
Time to get out of here ... (-:

    Ah yes. Nice ears. (kidding)

The fact your friend has been in the business for 30 explains a lot because newer designers would not have heard of RIP except in the context of graveyards. I've been in the business for about 40 years. So what's my excuse then? :-)

Jens, I think Doug was using the Columbus story to emphasize the same idea you illustrated with your personal experience, by broadening it beyond personal experience. Thus, you and he are in agreement about the importance of ignoring nay-sayers and wet blankets.

Doug, I appreciated your modernization of the imagined Italian reaction to Columbus's plan ("forgetaboutit!").

It was supposed to be a JOKE.
So much for my attempt at humour!
BTW-it wasn't Columbus but his detractors that I was making fun of!
