A long time ago I use an effect in Xara which looked like a corner of paper curling up but I can't remember how it was done in Xara. Nor which version... does anyone know what I am talking about? And how to do that?

Wheel,
I find the best way is to curl a piece of paper and try to reproduce it. Your curl is obviously an impossible curl, unless you could stretch paper. The biggest problem is you normally want the curl on a white piece of paper. Therefore the shadow cast by the curl actually highlights the curl.
I have attached a gif showing a curl and next to it is the same drawing with different fill colours showing the four shapes used to produce it. I think you should be able to reproduce your own from this

You're probably remembering Corel's Page Curl bitmap filter.

There is a very simple way of doing it in Xara...
check out this page:

Thanks for the address of the tutorials. I am learning XaraX, and find all information to be of value.

I do feel that the technique that Egg describes in his posting to make a more true to life page curl. IMHO

Thanks for the replies to my question and
for the great suggestions on how to replicate
the curl!

As for the Paper Curl - I remember now that is was another excellent program that had that effect!

PaintShop Pro! And Version 7 still has the effect!

Thanka again

I do it with the rectangle, line, and shape editor tools. Draw a box, convert to editable shape, use the line tool to place the UL, UR and LL corners where you want them, then drag each of those intersecting lines to some curve. Then pull the LR corner up to the curl you want. Use the Shape Editor tool to get the correct line curves in the shape.

Finally add a three-point shape for the back of the curl, place some shadowing on it using the Fill tool, and you have it. Plus color on the paper (with Fill tool), gloss, shadowing, transparency for effect, etc. And for my web work I export at 16-colors optimized error diffusion for neat effect. The 'stack' of papers on the right was tougher because I drop-shadowed each layer in the stack (offset 50/50) then sliced the shadows off the original (floating shadows), then manually sliced-and-diced each shadow to make sure all shadows (except for the bottom) didn't extend beyond the boundries of the underlying page.

You can see more examples of it on my portfolio site:

And thanks.....

ps. As a beginner to Xara, could you post a slightly more detailed tut on those page curls. I'd be very grateful. J :0)

Ok. But before I do that here's the source. Play with it to see how I've layered stuff. You may have to drop anti-aliasing ('Quality' mode) to zilch to see everything in wire-frame mode. The blue paper sample is made up of seven shapes, the stack is only 16. The actual shapes will appear as themselves, the shadows appear as rectangles ('cause they're really bitmaps).

My samples are a bit on the 'whimsical' side, you may want to be a little more careful when you drag curves, if you want a more realistic effect.

You'll also notice that each peice of paper is actually made of of two shapes, the primary shape with the colored fill and zero line width, and an underlying duplicate shape with no fill and a 2px white line width. That's there to break the pages slightly (which is seen more clearly when the image is larger - look on my site under 'Web', subsection 'DHTML' to see what I mean).

If you want lengthy communication about how to do it you might try direct email first (paulf@visualmode.com), as I only hit this site about once a week.

Later..
