Default viewing .xar files in folders

This is going to sound a little lame, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

A while ago I was suddenly able to see xara files (.xar) as thumbnails in windows (w2k) folders. I really liked that, but I have no idea what programme/filter/plugin I installed that made this possible. Now this ability has just as suddenly vanished <sigh> and I still have no idea why

Does anyone know of a way to get .xar files to display in windows folder thumbnails? It would be nice to have that back!

    Hi Brett,

Can you have a look inside the installed Xara Xtreme folder (typically C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Xtreme) and check to see whether there's a file called "XarThumb.dll" in there?

If there is, and if you know how to register DLLs, try registering it. I hope that will fix your problem. Failing that you can either uninstall the entire application and re-install (tedious) or we can tell you how to register that DLL.

Please let us know how you get on because someone else on the forum had the same problem (I think they solved it by re-installing).

Nope, in that folder there is no library file by that name. I'm using ver 2.0a DL.

I shall re-install and see what happens.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Phil

I've just been searching though my registry and xarthumb.dll does exist but it is in c:\program files\common files\xara.

So if anyone else is looking that's where it is.

John, registering files is fairly straightforward, you can use regedit, but you'll need information from Phil that I don't have.

John, to register a dll you need to open a command prompt (DOS window) and change directory to the folder where the dll will be. At the command prompt type regsvr32 mydll.dll

replace mydll.dll with the full path and file name of the dll file you need to register.

    To unregister a dll, use regsvr32 -u mydll.dll
replace mydll.dll with the full path and file name of the dll you need to unregister.

DO NOT unregister any system dll files or windows may not work.

    Hi Brett,

Thanks for the feedback. You're quite right about the location of the DLL - my mistake.
