The best font software I've found by far for managing and previewing fonts is Sue Fisher's The Font Thing http://members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.html

The best thing about it is that you can type in the phrase you want to see and all your fonts will show up in that font for that phrase. It is also completely free software and has all the other features you would want in a font management software.

Did you look at the bottom of the window and look at Xaras task bar?

    Was it saying "Finding CD"?

Really? I've heard about the startup thing (my W2k starts up fast enough for me though despite those 1300 fonts). But I didn't know it could affect the general speed of the computer. Think I'll have to do some testing here.

You can install a font without copying it to the system font folder, move, copy, temporarily load, delete, etc.
Actually I tried that program a while ago, but somehow I better liked my old FontLister 3 with its many features:

Version 4 is still in alpha or beta, and it crashes on my system, so I haven't been able to check it out. It also requires that you have the .NET package installed.

But I've only used them for browsing my fonts and installing new ones, not as font managers, so I have no idea how - or even if - they work in that respect.

BTW. check out the tiny FontSelector (link at the bottom of the page), it's free and very handy for browsing your fonts when you work. And it can be minimized to a small bar so it doesn't block the view but still can be accessed in an instant.

Font Xplorer is really a great application. Does exactly what I want but unfortunately it does not suppert Type 1 fonts. Too bad
