You might try Greenstreets "Draw 3" ( or the more expensive Draw 4 ). One of the features listed is "Autotraces bitmaps identifying outline shapes-Makes editable vector paths"
I haven't used this product so I can't vouch for its ability or usefulness, but at only a cost of $10 it might be worth the gamble.
    Check it out at: http://www.greenstreetsoftware.com/p.../usa/index.htm

Note: I happened to see the Draw 3 program on sale at Compusa yesterday for $7.99 (US$)

Phew! I mean to thank you all about a week ago, but I have had some ~cough~ computer problems ~cough~ (but they gave me a chance to upgrade some stuff--a hidden blessing!).

So here it is: Thank you all so much for your help. It is very refreshing to find a board whose posters really care as much as you guys. I'm coming here for any future Xara X problems!

(P.S. anyone else who has a suggestion, please keep posting.)

Deneba (now ACD Systems) has a nice little tutorial on "vectorisation" by hand. Intended for their program Canvas, but you can do the equivalent in Xara X (you might need a separate paint/image manipulation program for their posterisation step).

    Deneba's vectorisation tutorial
