In the Xara Gallery Forum the discussion on copyrights has touched upon the old thread where we successfully tried to replicate - then surpass - the Apple OS gel look. That has me thinking about using gel effects for non-Apple OS-like objects. Gary has done his gel worms, and Ivan his gummy bears. Then there was the jello thread. How about some new gel-things??

    ... some jelly babies.

Haven't seen them around for ages. I'm more of a chocolate person really. Hmmm ... chocolate coated jelly babies ... sounds interesting.

If I remember rightly they are only a little bit transparent and have a sort of matt-ish finish rather than being very shiny. I'll have to pop down to the sweet shop and see if they have any tomorrow. (Do you have jelly babies in Canada or the US anybody?)

BTW I saw a 'gummy bears' image in a previous thread which are a similar sort of product.

I really like the little bubbles trapped inside the drops! Shadows look good to me.

They sell jelly babies in North America. There is also a candy called 'jelly tots' but they don't look like little kids.

I really like the jelly candies that look like coke bottles and taste either like cola or root beer. I could eat a pound of them this evening if I had some!

... for all the nice replies!

I had a lot of fun messing around with it.

Doing this sort of thing really gets you thinking about what other effects you can experiment with. I actually found myself staring at a bar of soap covered with bubbles the other day for five minutes. My other half thought I had gone mad. It is a nice way to unwind to play around with different effects, and see what sort of things Xara can do.

I have also done a multicoloured version of 'Jelly Stuff', which I did on one letter by complete accident, it looked sort of funky so I changed all of them and saved as a new file. I will post it in a new thread in the Gallery Forum as you suggested Jack ... many thanks for the encouragement.

I put quite a severe compression on this file to get it down to 38kb or so as at 90% quality it was 65kb which I thought would be too big. In retrospect I probably could have made it slightly better quality as I've just noticed some subtle details are lost at this compression level. Still I live and learn, see if I can do a bit better with my next attachment.

    Regards to all

Jack your image reminds me of the candy Easter eggs with a candy coating over marshmellow, and the letters would be sweet-tarts. Great work.

Su great looking jelly sweets. The fruit drops could be either chewy jelly or hard candy. Excellent!

    Gummie Babies! I like it.

Well Ross here's my effort. Probably spent too much time on it when I should have been working but I was having too much fun with it!

I gave up for now with Jelly babies bought some this evening but they were a bit different to what I remembered them. They were covered in what looked like icing sugar which when I washed it off to see the texture etc made it go all sticky. They weren't very translucent either and I was interested in getting a more transparent effect this time. I might try doing them later with the icing sugar not sure how effective that might be though.

Bought some fruit drops which looked better to use as a study.

Took me a while to figure out the best techniques to getting the look of the thing which is what took the time, it was a case of to bevel or not to bevel etc. It still needs some tweeking with shadows and whatnot however.

Well I've got bags and bags of Jelly sweets and stuff now to get through, now if we had a chocolate challenge ... hmmm...

I like the semi-transparent look which is more accurate than completely transparent.

Looks real enough to pull them fillings right out of your mouth :-)
