Thanks all for the enthusiastic responses. It's been a while since I've had a winner :-)

The July tutorial goes into my usual detail for creating the neon effect as well as a few embellishments.

Dmagician, you make me smile :-)

Nice effect Gary, thanx.

I posted a gif in the gallery (106kb a bit big for the forum here). It's a cross-pollinaton of these tips and last month's tute which I did this morning. That was nice too.

I hope I didn't "blow the buns" on July's project?

I've played with Gary's new invention and I found this.

Steps 1,2 are the same as in Gary's your tut.
3. Remove contour from the orginal shape, place the shape above the glass tube and apply some cute fill. Notice that contrast transparency looks unrealistic on the texture.
4. Why not make a bitmap copy of the tube again (on white background of course). Now it interacts with the marble background as we would expect in the reality.
5. Darken transparency applied on the bitmap
6. Mix transparency and the stained transparency on the top of it creates quite a satisfying effect.

Here's an interesting variation that produces a metallic look.

Follow Gary's first three steps then apply "add shapes" to the contour shape to create a flat colored shape which you can then color as desired. Finally place the bitmap copy with alpha channel you created in step 3 of Gary's formula on top of this colored shape using "brightness" transparency rather than "contrast" transparency.

See example below.

HI again,

I created a flash verion of the neon lightbulb. It's all vector created in Xara and imported into Flash. I used the swf export (in most cases), and used the soften edges and alpha fills for transparency.

Enjoy, Wayne

That's really cool.

Have you checked in with Gerald? He's been e-mailing everyone he can think of trying to track you down.

Eric

I can't believe you posted the entire flourescent tube. Well, at least you did not place it horizontally on the page. (I better not give you any ideas)
