MPEG-1 tends to be well-supported across different platforms and movie players. Have you tried that?

    Hi Tao,

You could always try converting the avi's to the quicktime format as this is generally accepted across most browsers/os platforms. i'd personally use something like adobe premiere to convert between the two but i'm sure there are other apps (especially cheaper ones!!) that could also do the job.

    hope that helps.

    Hello Toa,

My company use to provide streaming media services. We stuck to using Windows Media as the only format. We found that statistically, this is a more accepted format for the masses. If you are targeting a specific market or viewership then you should use whatever format that is most common. This will take a little research on your part. Windows Media is the default media player for Internet Explorer and it used to be that 85% of the internet population used IE.

The encoding software is free as well. I will say that the quality of WM is not as good as quicktime or Real. So unless you are targeting a specific audience and you know what the best format for them is, or they know what you require and you make it easy for them to aquire that technology, you will be alright.

I hope this has helped. If you have any questions please shoo me an email.

    Thanks,
    John

I would suggest , personally in agreeance to the person above sick with windows media either .asf or .wmv . To convert use something like streamanywere by Sonic Foundry , their demo works..Or if you wish to keep it as .avi my favourites FREE virtual dub or tmpenc , very good .Or have you even considered converting to Flash ?

Well, Flash is arguably the most ubiquitous plugin out there, so converting video to Flash seems like a pretty obvious route...except that it used to be a pain in the butt to do, and the end quality was often quite nasty.

MX, though, has gone a long way to bring video to the web, and Sorenson has gone a step further. Have a look at Sorenson Squeeze at http://www.sorenson.com/content.php?cats=2/4&nav=2

I managed to get an 888 MB file down to 980 KB at a pretty decent size (far better than would normally be expected on the web). I'm sold!!!

Sorry for dredging up an old topic - just started playing with Squeeze yesterday, and had to drop everyone a line to let them know. Woohoo!
