Stu,
I know I'm blue eyed to the max. I've never thought about the fact that a project like DivX would include a spyware or ad ware.
However, I've downloaded and installed the 3.11 version without ad or spyware - 5.0 looked a bit suspicious to me.
BTW, only if the spyware code is included in the application it will run on our systems. If it's a separate executable, the system will ask the admin (me) if I grant the permission to install it.
And if it's included in the app code, the spyware can't connect to any address outside the net - our f firewall server blocks all requests ;-}. In the worst case the firewall log will issue an alarm and show exactly which application tried to 'call home', which port it tried to use, etc. So everything that's not permitted will be blocked, killed or trigger an alarm. And believe me, I've set up extremely tight rules for our LAN. I'm using the same security set up as the US Navy, US Airforce and NASA for their LAN's and WAN's because I'm connected to a NOC (Network Operation Center) and don't want to take any risk of being 'misused' as a back door to some 8.000 servers or more.
Anyway, I think going with the 3.11 DivX is a good choice because most of the animations are compressed with this codec anyway - it'll take some time for the v 5.0 to reach a broad basis.
