Question: does anyone of you already use the DivX codec to generate videos from 3D apps, specifically together with C4D?

Just curious, because I've just downloaded the codec - they say it does feature a real good compression ratio with an excellent picture quality...

    Jens--

Just about every pyrite film on the Web uses DivX compression. It is, IMO, better compression than others for motion pictures, including commercial releases.

you don't know anything about modeling? Hm.

Well, I don't want pirated movies, I'm looking for an alternative to the Indeo or Soerensen codec. Indeo is not too bad, but generates relatively hughe file sizes. I have a tool to convert AVI's to MPEG, but this requires an additional step, and MPEG 1 is kind of lousy.

I'll keep searching, make a backup of my system and install the codec to testdrive it.

Yes, you are right: I am on the 'compression' trip right now ;-}, but I think if everyone would use Lurawave and DivX we could save lots of loading times or transfer bandwidth...

DivX is used on most sites that I've seen that show examples of 3d animations. Many of the sample LightWave videos on NewTek's website use DivX. It offers excellent video quality vs compression. I don't export animations for the web, so I've never needed to use it, but I know it can be used to render animations directly from LightWave to a DivX compressed video file.

    Earl,

thanks for the info! And guess what: I've installed the DivX codec, set up a test scene and rendered it with the codec. 51 frames @ 800 x 600 (!) only 64 k.

WOOOOOOW. It would have been megabytes with the Indeo codec...

All I can say: incredible. amazing. wonderful. I **love** it.

    Stu,

I know I'm blue eyed to the max. I've never thought about the fact that a project like DivX would include a spyware or ad ware.

However, I've downloaded and installed the 3.11 version without ad or spyware - 5.0 looked a bit suspicious to me.

BTW, only if the spyware code is included in the application it will run on our systems. If it's a separate executable, the system will ask the admin (me) if I grant the permission to install it.

And if it's included in the app code, the spyware can't connect to any address outside the net - our f firewall server blocks all requests ;-}. In the worst case the firewall log will issue an alarm and show exactly which application tried to 'call home', which port it tried to use, etc. So everything that's not permitted will be blocked, killed or trigger an alarm. And believe me, I've set up extremely tight rules for our LAN. I'm using the same security set up as the US Navy, US Airforce and NASA for their LAN's and WAN's because I'm connected to a NOC (Network Operation Center) and don't want to take any risk of being 'misused' as a back door to some 8.000 servers or more.

Anyway, I think going with the 3.11 DivX is a good choice because most of the animations are compressed with this codec anyway - it'll take some time for the v 5.0 to reach a broad basis.

I happened across a conversation in a forum people were having and a guy who downloaded 5 would not believe the other guy that it was full of ad spyware, until he checked it with Ad aware that is.I think he came up with around 80 bits that were ad related and had no useful function for DI vx........I will see if I can find the conversation again it was really interesting and informative
