Open With is not offering Xara X1

Hi all,

Even during beta testing I was having this issue, now I have loaded up my boxed version CD and the same thing happens. I right click on an image file (.xar files offer Xara X1 in the Open With menu, no problem there) then choose the Open With menu and end up browsing to the XaraX.exe and then choose it and close out of that dialog and it's STILL not offered in the menu!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

As stated above the program is offered in the Open With menu when a .xar file is right clicked on.

Anyone else have this issue with image files and the right click Open With menu??

Hi RAMWolff,

Sorry I am not going to be much help, but when I right click on a .xar file and choose "open with" Xara X1 is listed and opens the file fine.
This was done using the boxed version. Had not tried your problem on the downloaded version.
I am using windows XP home.

Just thought you may like to know.

I think Richard is referring to opening an *image* file (.jpg, .gif, .bmp, etc) using the "open with" right-click option in Windows Explorer.

I just tried opening a .jpg with Xara X1 from Windows 2000 Explorer:

The first time I tried it, Xara X1 was not listed in the "open with" flyout on the right-click menu, so I used the "Choose Program..." option and selected "Xara X Application" from the list that appeared. I did not need to use the "other" button to find the Xara X1 executable as Xara X1 was already registered as "Xara X Application".

The .jpg opened just fine in Xara and when I later repeated the process, "Xara X Application" was among the options listed in the Explorer Right-click "open with" flyout menu.

So, in short ;-) , it works fine here on my Windows 2000 system.

Hi Richard,

Pete has the correct solution. Choosing the "Other..." button doesn't always register the program in the "Open With..." part of the registry.

I'm using XP. When I right click on a non-xara image, the Xara Application is listed. Don't think I set this up before.

Here's the exact steps I take:

1) right click on an image file
2) choose Open With
3) Xara X1 is not in the line up so.....
4) click on Choose Program
5) Xara X1 is not in the list so.....
6) I click on the Browse button
7) make my way over to where the XaraX.exe is living in the Program Files folder
8) double click on it or click on the Open button
9) still not registering!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

I guess a work around to this is to put a shortcut in my Send To folder but, while it will open the image fine, it opens up a new instance of Xara X1 if I have one running already!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Richard, I know you edit the registry on occation. Here's a link to an article about clearing the 'Open with' list. It shows you the registry keys and what the entries look like when a program is in the list. Open With List

Well, entered the registry and I looked up all the image file formats that I mostly use in Xara X1 (Bmp, Jpeg, jpg, Png, Tif, Tiff and Gif) and all had XaraX.exe listed un the OpenWithList folders. So I'm not sure why the heck Xara X is not in the Open With menu in the right click menu when I go to use it.
