    For all of you who consider to switch to Linux:

    SuSE 8.1, KDE 3.1 or Blackbox, Kernel 2.4.x

    It might help if you install the DCOM98 utility first, because some Win installers need it.

    Xara X installs without any problem. If Xara X hangs on the splash screen (and you hear a beep), then there is probably some message asking for user input, but you cannot see it nor close it. In this case kill the splash, make sure no wine processes are running, then change "Managed" to 'N' in wine-config.

    Then start up again. Make sure you always select 'Never show this dialog again' to prevent those dialogs from coming up everytime! Answer the questions whether XAR and other extensions should be associated with Xara always with 'Yes'. After you've answered all questions, Xara will crash ;-}

    Now change back to 'Managed'='Y'. Run Xara again. This time Xara will run.

    If Xara complains about Xara-Font not installed properly, make sure its the only font in the Windows/Font directory.

    Use the latest wine release available @

    http://www.winehq.org or http://www.codeweavers.com/home/

    There is no excuse to not install Linux...

    All the best,

    I know Suze 8.1 can now easily configurate my graphic board and my monitor (which wasn't so easy under Suze 7.2), but do you hear something about Wacom tablets support? My own is an Intuos (first version) with a normal sensitive pen.
    I have installed openoffice and on my Win2K system and replaced my Netscape7 by Mozilla and I am very happy !

    Kindly,
    ivan

    you should check

    http://www.mediascape.com/artstream-linux.html

    for a native Linux art app. As far as I understand it's pretty close to Xara X plus PageMaker in one app. I'll install a trial next week to see how its performance.

    Sorry about that, slip of the keyboard the unfinished line is supposed to read;

    "... if it's notpatched!"

    Up with Linux!

    Thanks Jens, for keeping us informed of your reasearch with Linux, and Xara X and art... as soon I get back home I'm going to be switching back. Have had some experience with Linux back on my Amiga when it was first introduced and then later when I had a dual boot system but art got in the way...

    Now it is time to return... well in 6 weeks
    and 5200+ kms it will be.

    Keep up the great work it is appreciated.

    Reji

    Thanks Jens ! It seems that this app supports Wacom tablets. It's gradient technology is very interesting, and even much more flexible than Illustrator's mesh fill tool !!! In this area the concepts are inventive and very different from all what one know in Windows and Mac worlds !!!

    But is it only compatible with the Red hat distribution ???

    Tahnks and kindly,
    ivan

    yes Ivan, it will run on Red Hat - the Irix port has been done on a Red Hat system. But it is system independent - any Linux distribution will work with it. The differences between the distributions are marginal - for installers. Some offer YaST, others different ones, but the Kernel, the file structures etc are mostly identical. As long as it is an RPM you can install it, and if it's a tarball you can compile it directly for your machine and kernel specs, which will make it a lot smoother and faster (command sequence: ./config - make - make install). And if you happen to have a fast graphic card with OpenGL support I think it will fly like a supersonic miracle ;-}

    Unfortunately I don't have the time to test drive it the next days, but as soon as I will have finished my stuff I will dive deep into it and get back to post some infos.
