Does any one have any experience with designing chrome graphic elements? I am working on some hot rod influenced designs and don't have a clue where to start.

This beveled (or extruded) Chevey SS logo is cool, but I dont know if its exactly Chrome?

    Hi Byronious,

There are several ways to get a 'chrome' style. Gary's Jan 2000 tutorial shows how to do Chrome. If you do an Advanced Find on Talkgraphics for the word Chrome you will find many posts with examples.

My attachment uses a couple of those.

The top image uses a method similar to what you have. I added a clone on top of the text and then used a bitmap fill with a high value of bleach transparency.

The bottom image uses a technique that Jens posted a few years ago.

Paul - Thanks for the tip about how to have the image show in the post. Another 'rubber cookie' and 'gold star' for you http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Chrome is like a mirror and reflects the earth and the sky.

I find that Hue 210 in the HVS Color Model works best for the sky blue color of chrome, and backed off considerable in saturation.

The dark band in the center of the chrome represents the horizon and is a warm dark gray, Hue 40, and again with very little saturation.

Well I'll put in my "tuppence" worth, chrome has no color actually, chrome takes it's 'color' from the surrounding area and reflects them on the surface. So basically when designing a Chrome finish all you have to do is reflect the surrounding objects with appropriate distortions apllied.

    John,

Byronius wants to create chrome text, which is different from car parts chrome, because text features a flat surface. 3D objects feature a complex environment mapping, whereas text just reflects a small part of the environment.

    see sample below.

hi Yes, but Rons chrome does look very realistic on most of his works... For me. Yours looks good, but not like chrome, more of a mirror finish.

PS... After you add your pic you can edit your post and add a link to it so it will display...
