Hey Xarans, how about a aurora borealis challange to get the creative juices flowing? For those who don't know them by that name, the "aurora borealis" are the "Northern Lights".

Show us your interpretation of nature's light show...

    Season's Greetings, Ross

Nice colors in your Northen Lights! It is also a different take to place it over water. I have never seen the lights over water but I would imagine that I would look spectacular.

I like the way the lights softly blend in to the dark sky.

Do your get them in NS?

Yes I have seen the Northern Lights from here in Nova Scotia although it was many years ago. I'm sure they are 'out there' more frequently than I've seen them. Here in the city the light pollution probably dilutes them

Have you seen them in Quebec? If anyone else has seen them how about posting to say where you were? (and post a drawing too of course ).

For those who have never seen them - you have missed something really spectacular. They aren't easy to describe. Coloured light dances across the northern sky in an awe inspiring display far grander than any fireworks display.

...and a woman friend on 29 september 1999!

That was early in the evening and there were some small thunderstorm clouds in the sky. After some minutes in the plane, we were advised that there were some auroras to see. We had the chance to see three very nice ones.

The most marvellous "au revoir" I never had!

    Here are my impressions:

    Kindly,

    ivan

here's my first attempt. Perhaps not really strong enough, and a bit too high in the sky.

Paul , I like yours ... stylized yet along a realistic approach. I don't think they are too high or low. I was once really into astronomy so I was outside with the telescope a lot and saw these lights many times from Nova Scotia (not through the telescope of course). Mostly though they were right along the northern horizon and were mostly fairly uniform bands with little colour and some banding details (I always kept away from lights and allowed my eyes to adjust to the dark for 15 minutes or so to see the faintest light I could ... being in a small town helped to). On a couple occasions faint curved bands were as high as directly overhead (I'm fairly certain none of these ones I saw would have been visible through the sky glow of a city). From what I have heard, they are very impresive at higher latitudes.

While looking at your two different versions, the thought that this would make a neat animated gif with many frames came to mind.
