i want to make the steel pawns, how did i add the steel effects to these marble's pawns, i didnt know how to make the steel effects using material in 3d max.

    Hell and welcome Shiraz---

I'm not an authority on 3DS, and there are others on this list who are, so I hope they will expand on my meager, generalized explanation here.

The accompanying image shows the difference between a default plastic look and metal. As you can see, to get a "chrome" look, you need to increase the reflective properties of the pieces.

Now here's the trick: lots of times, as with 3DS which performs reflection mapping, you need something of visual interest in the scene upon which to reflect. I used an image map I will post shortly to give visual detail in the pawn, which otherwise would have no discernable reflection, hence fail as a "metal-looking" object.

    Gare

Here's an image map to use when scenes don't have enough detail to bounce a real reflection map.

I not only like the material, the shape is also very "designish". Good work!

Your finished image looks more real than mine does!

Nice work. Where can I buy the whole chess set?

BTW, here is this Season's best link to spread the love and wonder around. For every click on the Toys For Tots logo on this page, $1 will be donated by Excedrin to Toys For Tots. All you have to do is click, nothing else required, and they even suggest that folks pass the URL around.
