    simon - if you are going to plump for the php route, then you may want to check out the site phpbuilder.com, i found it quite useful when i began finding my way through the php world.

    After a bit of a battle, I have got PHP and MySQL working on my development machine. So perhaps I should just go for it!

    Thanks for all your help. I've got PHP/MySQL working. My first application is a glossary of terms - www.thelondonhouse.co.uk/othrinfo/findglossaryitem.htm . A hidden function is that it logs the searches. I'm quite pleased - it's very fast.
