After a bit of a battle, I have got PHP and MySQL working on my development machine. So perhaps I should just go for it!

Thanks for all your help. I've got PHP/MySQL working. My first application is a glossary of terms - www.thelondonhouse.co.uk/othrinfo/findglossaryitem.htm . A hidden function is that it logs the searches. I'm quite pleased - it's very fast.
