As I was pulling out of my driveway early this morning, I noticed the flag hanging from its pole next the front door. It is angled at approximately 60 degrees.

The folding of the cloth I found to be quite beautiful, particularly the pattern of the stripes as they progress from being diagonal to nearly vertical.

    MY CHALLENGE:
    1. For beginning/intermediate users: how could Xara X be used to construct YOUR FLAG (not necessarily the Stars and Stripes) or hanging cloth or drapes? Freehand it like a true artist? Use the mold/perspective tools? What's your technique?

    2. For advanced users: how would you animate YOUR FLAG to simulate the rippling of cloth in the wind?

    Regards, John

P.S. For my friends in the UK. Ever since I was a little boy drawing flags, I have always wondered how to draw the crossing stripes of the Union Jack. What are their proportions supposed to be and how are they placed ?????

If anyone is interested they'll find an envelope for a fluttering flag and a wavy one on the shareware pages as part of the group of envelopes Gary posted for me. Illustration attached,

PS Thanks John for one of the sane contributions to the off topic thread, much appreciated. A lot of the rest leave me depressed,

    Hi.
I have used http://www.flags.net as a good resource for flags. (They have Union Jac on their frontpage today). They are bitmaps, but if use them as backgrounds, many flags are easy to draw i XaraX.

I remember I created this logo using CorelXara a couple of years ago:

Perhaps I'll give this a try for the next tutorial.

Basically the flag will need to be broken up into sections and individually enveloped. Should be quite a challenge.

It seems that the dimensions of some flags at flags.net can be incorrect (as the Norwegian.

I'm new at using Xara, but here is my shot at the
    U.S. Flag.

...6 free US flags from Comstock, each of them is 5"x7" at 300 dpi.

    Beautiful designs.

It's a Red Ensign, the flag of the British Merchant Navy. Animating a flag is very difficult, most I've seen just appear as sheets with a ripple running thru them, which is only a small part of a flags movement.
