I don't think theres a way of of adjusting the size display above 2 decimal points in Xara.
HOWEVER I believe the easiest way to get accurate measuremnts is via the grid option. If you set your major grid spacings to 1 inch and the sub spacings to 8 (for working in 1/8th of an inch units) and snap to grid, the size of the shape will be 3 and 7/8 inches exactly and NOT the 3.88 inches displayed on the status bar. It's just that Xara only displays to 2 decimal places.
At least thats what appears to happen.
I tried an experiment. Set the grid to 1 inch and 64 minor spacings.
Draw 2 rectangles exactly the same, one above the other, 1 inch wide.
Set the reference point to the top left corner.
Now select the top rectangle and set the width to 0.98 inch in the status bar.
Now select the bottom rectangle and set the width to 0.984375 in the status bar (63/64ths of an inch)
Zoom into the right hand end and you will see a difference in length, even tho the status bar shows both rectangles as 0.98 wide.
