PNG - why we use it more?

Thought this to be a good illustration of the differences. I found this in replying to another thread. (Please forgive the bandwidth hog.)

First image is a .jpg @ 95%. File size 60k. (Even at 100 % image is "mushy".)

.gif. File size 30k, but banding is apparent.

Your comparison doesn't quite go far enough because you're comparing a 256 colour GIF with a Truecolor (16.7 million colour) PNG. If you choose 256 colours for the PNG export the file size drops to 25.3K.

To reduce the banding and also have small file size, choose Error Diffusion dithering and 256 colours. With this option the GIF would be 36.5K and the PNG 31.4K

Excellent tip. Worked like a champ! Both images came out very nice. (I'm not gonna post them, I've already eaten enough bw.) I haven't experimented with palettes much, but can see the value of it plainly. Again, thanks.
