Hi- thanks for the info. Following this I can get it to work - but if I have more than 1 text item the entire mouseover layer gets displayed - so all the text gets highlighted not just the 1 piece...

I thought of that, but I thought if I grouped it ALL the menu items would change color at the same time - or are you suggesting group each text item with itself?
