Had a reply from Xara support that the issue has been forwarded to the developer for fixing and in the meantime, as Gary suggests "use another slideshow widget" :)

I've ticketd it but is anyone else getting errors trying to use the online slideshow widget? I'm seeing it on PC and my laptop. I Load the design new widget widget and first time it says the website...

This is the third time I've had to activate offline with the different versions and they've usually replied within 3-4 hours. Hopefully, I'll get a resolution on Monday :)

Xara support had me clearing the design gallery cache and restarting to no effect. I've uninstalled and reinstalled as both admin and normal user but still no change. It appears that it is a glitch...

If this is true then I will be demanding a refund and will stick with DPX9. Not because I didn't get something for free but simply the principal, it's almost bait and switch and that makes me angry....

Sorry but the website implies that we get these themes with the upgrade.

Both the desktop and laptop are using Windows 7 ultimate and I use a mouse on both. Using the touchpad on the laptop does the same as using the mouse, i.e. not a lot :)
